Chasing a Flawed Sun is a harrowing story of narrowly escaping personal destruction, a life in prison—and death over and over again. It’s a young mans story of years spent avoiding cold, hard truths in pursuit of the warmth and comfort of heroin in a spoon.
Daniel writes, “There is a sense of security I get from the sun. It brings me hope, brightness, energy and warmth. The soft kiss of the sun upon my skin cradles me. It blankets my body in a sense of comfort, and I spend as much time in it as possible. There was only ever one other thing on Earth that gave me the same feeling, the same warmth, security, and energy—and that was heroin.
Heroin was my flawed sun. It burned me every time I got too close. It consumed me in its fire, and by the grace of God, I narrowly escaped with my life.”
Our entire life is a chase, if we aren’t chasing something we are dying. We seek to find purpose inside the chase. Once we’ve caught what we are chasing we are immediately unfulfilled. It is the actual chase that fulfills us, it gives us meaning and focus, it ignites our passion.
In this autobiography Daniel lays out for us the chases that lead him to where he is today with a new mission in life.
This book really opens your eyes to the life of an addict. Danny does a great job relaying all the small play by play details that show you the dark depths of addiction. The way he describes the hold it has on you and the thought processes he went through falling in and out of the habit provide a relatability that a lot of writers aren’t able to project. I loved how he described the redundancy of his relapses at different time periods in his life but showed the different ways he lead himself down the wrong path each time. His multiple descriptions of how addiction takes a grip of your life and mentality is eye-opening. I also guarantee any that has been an addict or dealt with addicted personally can identify significantly with similar routines and events that occurred throughout his story. This is also a book about mental toughness and what it takes to dig yourself out of something only you can control and just how difficult it is to pull away from anything with such control over your psyche. It’s unfortunate this is a true story but it’s a story that needs to be told to lead people out of of the darkness.
I am not an addict myself, however surrounded by those who have been affected by this disease. From start to finish this is a real, raw and amazing story of how Danny begun his road INTO addiction, while he crawls his way out of it. I couldn’t put this book down and will continue to read it throughout the years to have the real insight on addiction and what it does to those we love. (Emily Pennington)
Best book I have read in a long time. I was so sad when it came to an end. The author definitely put his heart and soul into this book. It is filled with raw emotions and gives a great depiction of the life of an addict and how to come out on the other side. Being from Baltimore it gave me a better insight on what’s really going on out there and how this epidemic is destroying too many lives. I recommend this book hands down and so glad it has a beautiful ending.
Some people are really curious about the drug world in Baltimore City..I was...Questions like why would somebody live this way...how do you find the good stuff...how does a skiny white boy not get murdered...Well my friend you answered them all and so much more. I loved this book because Daniel wrote with such passion that I found myself being right there with him as hustled his way to my city. I am grateful you made it out alive like so many of us has. You have inspired me to continue the fight to help just one..My son Brandon did not make it out alive but I will never stop fighting for him...It does give me hope because if you can chase the a Risen Son we all have a chance to do the same.
Danny is considered a pillar of the community, where I’m from. While I knew part of his story, it really shows that people CAN change. As someone in recovery myself, I appreciate this book so much. The detail of the obsession, the struggle and the want to get better were on point. I hope that people that don’t have personal experience with addiction take the time to read this book. It takes you on a journey inside the mind of the addict. While our stories are different, our feelings are all the same. Thank you Danny, for writing your memoir. You are a beacon of hope for many!!!
I purchased your book from amazon and just finished your book the other day. What can I say that everybody else hasn't already written about your book, but it needs to be turned into a Movie or TV Documentary. You described the Heroin Addiction in Baltimore City as raw and real as the addicts that continue to live and die each day in this city. Heroin does not discriminate who you are or where you live. This was an amazing read into the raw inside story behind the addicts. Everyone that has a love one suffering from addiction should read this book it will open your eyes. I applaud your raw writing, truthfulness, and sharing your story. Glad you made it off the streets of Baltimore to a life of recovery and living your Dreams. God Bless your Parents, Family, and You. Thank You
